Harvard Law professor Lawrence Lessig, godfather of the campaign finance reform movement, threatened to run for president. He said getting money out of politics is the most important issue which all lesser issues hinge upon. He has now reached his goal and will be entering the Democratic primary. Cenk Uygur, host of the The Young Turks, breaks it down. Tell us what you think in the comment section below.

“After exceeding his $1 million crowd-funding goal, Harvard Law School professor Larry Lessigannounced today on “This Week” that he is running for president.

“I think I’m running to get people to acknowledge the elephant in the room,” he told ABC’s George Stephanopoulos. “We have to recognize — we have a government that does not work. The stalemate, partisan platform of American politics in Washington right now doesn’t work.”

If elected, he says he will be the first “referendum president,” promising to serve only as long as it takes to pass his Citizens Equality Act of 2017 — a bill aimed at reforming campaign finance, voting rights, and Congressional representation. Once the bill is passed, Lessig said he would then step down, handing over the reins to his vice president.”*

  1. magical candidate Lessig will somehow be able to bypass congress and the entire donor class of oligarchs simply because he has only one issue he cares about dealing with. Somehow, by always talking about it and making it an essential part of his campaign, but not making it his only issue, Bernie Sanders will never be able to get money out of politics. Lessig has a magic wand that makes that entire wall of money disappear. At least that’s what it seems like Cenk thinks.

Back in sad old reality, where we have to actually live, Lessig will split votes for Bernie and Hillary will be elected, and money out of politics will not even be words she remembers how to say after the primary.
