If it can only be research then a space elevator or a reliable true single stage to orbit launch system (like the space shuttle would have been if it had been properly funded), and a series of advanced probes/manned missions to Mars, Europa, and Titan, aimed at finding extraterrestrial life if it exists in our solar system, and leading to a permanent human presence in space and/or on other worlds. If it could include other things, free college for everyone who wants it, single payer health-care system, advanced high speed rail network, renewable energy, and infrastructure repair and improvements.

    I bet that even most liberals and progressives think that these things would cost too much, but I think they would actually grow the economy, create jobs, and benefit all of humanity long into the future. The problem is that they require long term planning and investment that may not turn an immediate profit.
