Another exhilarating game in what I can undoubtedly say has been the most entertaining World Cup of my time. Devastation for the U.S as they lose in extra time for the second straight World Cup, but they went out with an enormous bang. A goalless 90 minutes in which Tim Howard played out of his skin. The U.S. number 1 along with the whole back 4 kept the U.S in it as the weathered the Belgium storm.
De Bruyne, who was the best player in the first 90, could not break through, neither could Hazard. And then out of no where Wondolowski missed a glorious opportunity to steal the game from under Belgium, but ballooned it over the bar.
The game was then turned on its head in extra time as an inspired substitution by Vilmots paid off. Lukaku muscled his way past Besler to create chance for De Bruyne , who put Belgium in front. Lukaku then put Belgium 2 up, poor defending again left Howard exposed.
But just as the game seemed out of sight, Kilinsmann had a trick up his sleeve, Julian Green started what would be an onslaught of american attacks as he finished a beautiful pass from Bradley. But as the U.S piled on the pressure they could not draw level as Belgium go to the quarter finals. In terms of the overall performance it must be said that Belgium deserved their victory and continue with their 100% winning record.
Turk- Despite competition from Howard, Lukaku takes the Turk.
Jerk- Many people would expect Wondolowski for that miss, but I have stressed the importance of defensive concentration and Besler sold the jersey on that attempt to rugby tackle Lukaku, which led to the goal.
