Yesterday news broke of an American dentist from Minnesota who paid to hunt a beloved lion in Zimbabwe known as Cecil the lion. Well of course there are some foul reports of play in that situation where it might have not happened as legally as it was supposed to. But, nonetheless, PETA is not happy about this

Cenk Uygur and Ana Kasparian (The Point) hosts of The Young Turks discuss. Are statements like these the reasons why people have issues with PETA? Let us know what you think in the comments below.

PETA has released a shocking statement in the wake of Cecil the Lion’s death, saying the dentist who hunted and killed the animal should be killed.

“Hunting is a coward’s pastime,” PETA president Ingrid Newkirk said in a statement to Time. “If, as has been reported, this dentist and his guides lured Cecil out of the park with food so as to shoot him on private property, because shooting him in the park would have been illegal, he needs to be extradited, charged, and, preferably, hanged.”

On July 1, Cecil was lured out of a protected area by a hunting guide and shot with a bow and arrow by Minnesota dentist Walter Palmer, who reportedly paid $50,000 for the privilege.

  1. Cenk is against the death penalty not because killing is wrong, but because they don’t always get the right guy. He has said in the past, very passionately, that if he could know for sure they were guilty, he would want to kill people.. So, why is it ridiculous to suggest that a guy tortures, murders, skins and beheads a lion should die? We know he did it. He admits to doing it. Yet, Cenk is not just against his murder, not just something he wouldn’t support. He thinks it’s absurd, the height of irresponsibility of PETA to suggest it. According to Cenk, people guilty of certain crimes can be murdered, that human life isn’t too valuable not to sacrifice. That human life can be killed just for killing someone else.. And that’s just murder, not even torture, skinning and beheading.

So PETA believes that animals have value too, and we shouldn’t just kill them. To them, this guy committed murder. This is a murderer who admits to his crime. so to them, with the life they value, they are completely consistent with Cenk morally. The only difference is that they respect more kinds of life than Cenk does. Cenk isn’t religious. If you aren’t religious, then God didn’t make you special. If God didn’t make you special, then you can’t just assume human beings all have an innate right to life that cannot be infringed, and all non human animals just don’t. That’s not justifiable without some kind of evidence, and without God making you as his special little snowflakes that are all so super special, there is no evidence that justifies special human treatment. Everything you can point to as uniquely human is only important as an arbiter of value, because you are judging it as a human being. If you judged it as an aardvark, then special aardvark traits would be considered the most important, and human beings are terrible at sucking ants out of the ground with their snout.
