Large portions of the Patriot Act could very well lapse within just the next week. If that were to happen, what would change in terms of the government’s ability to spy on what you’re doing on your phone calls and in your emails? What would stay the same?

Ana Kasparian (The Point) and John Iadarola (Think Tank) break it down. If the Patriot Act lapses, will the government actually stay out of our data? Tell us what you think in the comments below.

“Forget Edward Snowden. It may just be congressional dysfunction that brings down the Patriot Act.

The nation’s lawmakers and intelligence community leaders are in disarray over the pending expiration of certain provisions of the legislation. Those provisions, specifically Section 215 of the law, have allowed the government to vacuum up details on the email and phone records of millions of Americans since they were first approved by Congress in 2001.

But despite advocates warning for years that the pending expiration needed to be dealt with, Congress, in standard Washington fashion, has waited until the last minute. And it’s put the very existence of the highly controversial program at risk.

The White House has said it’s starting to wind down the bulk collection program given the potential for expiration, but no one is quite sure what that entails — or what it means for the troves of data still swept up in Fort Meade.”
