GOP Loves Putin, So Why Did Boehner Say Bush Would Punch Him?

“House Speaker John Boehner says President Barack Obama’s predecessor would have deterred Russian President Vladimir Putin from invading Ukraine.

“Does anybody think that Vladimir Putin would have gone into Crimea had George W. Bush been president of the United States?” Boehner said on Monday in Davenport, Iowa, where the Ohio Republican is campaigning for GOP hopefuls. “No! Even Putin is smart enough to know that Bush would have punched him in the nose in about 10 seconds!”

The comments drew applause from the crowd of GOP volunteers.”* The Young Turks hosts Cenk Uygur & John Iadarola break it down.

  1. You guys really need to look up your history on who “invaded” who back in 2008, and you might want to take a slightly more informed and nuanced approach as to what happened with the annexation of Crimea (the referendum and all that … you might even want to follow up with some reporting from actual residents of Crimea). It’s understood that Putin is supposed to be evil incarnate, and there’s a massive group-think hate-on for Russia these days, but your standards in terms of critical thinking are normally a bit higher than that. Here’s a suggestion, and it’s just a suggestion: try to look at events in Ukraine and Russia without filtering them through the domestic American political lens. Not everything that happens in the world is a function of American GOP vs. Democrat politics, and seeing things that way has a huge distorting effect on your perceptions. Please try and stop using the “evil Putin” meme as a way of scoring points at each other. Instead, ask some basic questions about how this meme got downloaded into people’s heads. It’s frankly absurd to see how all world events get squeezed through this narrow fight between Republicans and Democrats … doesn’t help anyone except the local combatants.

On the other hand, I suppose there’s just some level of stubbornness in thinking that even the best of American news commentary (i.e., the TYT) can’t quite get over.

Here’s one independent journalist who does good work in this area – and here’s an idea, why not have him on the show for an “alternative” perspective.
