Turkish Deputy PM: Women Shouldn’t Laugh in Public

A Turkish deputy prime minister is taking a lot of heat after he declared that the country was in the midst of moral decay and corruption — because women laughed too much.

Minister Bülent Arınç gave a speech during the feast of Eid-al-Fitr, celebrating the end of Ramadan, in which he went on a long lecture about the nature of chastity, and the ways that a woman can “protect her chasteness” — including, among other things, not laughing, talking on cellphones, or driving cars.

Chastity is so important,” Arınç said, according to Hurriyet Daily News. “[The woman] will know what is haram and not haram. She will not laugh in public. She will not be inviting in her attitudes and will protect her chasteness.”
